FORMER Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has emerged as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections, securing the party’s ticket for an eighth term in the Senate.
News Point Nigeria reports that Lawan’s emergence followed consultations among APC leaders and stakeholders in the senatorial district, culminating in his endorsement after what party officials described as a successful screening exercise conducted on Monday.
In a statement issued on Monday, the former Senate President, who has represented Yobe North in the National Assembly since 1999, described his emergence as a collective decision inspired by unity within the party.
“This moment is not a personal victory but a victory for democracy, for unity of purpose, and for our collective commitment to the progress of Yobe North,” he said.
The lawmaker expressed appreciation to the APC leadership at both the national and state levels, including Mai Mala Buni, Governor of Yobe State, and the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Geidam, for their support throughout the process.
“I express my gratitude to the Almighty Allah for His infinite grace. I also extend my deepest appreciation to our leaders at all levels, from the national leadership of the APC to our state chapter, our respected Governor, His Excellency, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, His Excellency, Senator Ibrahim Geidam, and the stakeholders of Yobe North Senatorial District who, through meticulous consultations and a spirit of brotherhood, declared my candidacy following my clearance after a successful screening exercise by the party,” he stated.
Lawan also linked his renewed bid to ongoing reforms under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing the Renewed Hope Agenda as transformative.
Speaking on his representation of Yobe North, the former Senate President said he remained committed to expanding educational opportunities, infrastructure, and economic development across the district.
“To my constituents in Yobe North, you are the reason I am here.
“Together, we have made significant strides in delivering impactful legislation, facilitating educational support, and attracting critical infrastructure to our communities. But I remain restless because there is much more work to be done,” he said.
He further outlined a vision centred on digital inclusion, youth empowerment, and agricultural transformation ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Looking ahead to 2027, my vision is for Yobe North to be fully integrated into the digital economy, a district where our youth have access to functional skills and global opportunities, and a constituency where every farmer has the support to turn subsistence farming into commercial agribusiness,” he added.
Lawan also pledged to run an issue-based campaign and assured party members of his continued loyalty to the APC.
