OPERATIVES of the Department of State Services, working in collaboration with forest guards, have intercepted a consignment of medical supplies allegedly intended for fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province in Borno State.
News Point Nigeria reports that the interception was said to have taken place on Friday during a coordinated security operation in Kaga Local Government Area of the state, according to a report by Zagazola Makama, a publication focused on security and counter-insurgency developments in the Lake Chad region.
Citing security sources, the publication reported that the operation targeted a suspected supply route allegedly used by insurgent logistics networks operating within and around forested areas of Borno State.
According to the report, the recovered items included large quantities of pain-relief medications, anti-malaria injections, antibiotics and other pharmaceutical products. The consignment also contained basic consumables believed to have been intended for battlefield resupply.
The publication further stated that the seized materials were allegedly linked to efforts aimed at replenishing ISWAP fighters following casualties and operational setbacks suffered during recent intelligence-led operations conducted by Nigerian security forces in collaboration with the United States Africa Command.
Makama reported that the interception formed part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to disrupt insurgent logistics networks and prevent the movement of medical and material support to remote terrorist enclaves operating within the region.
According to the publication, preliminary investigations indicated that the supplies were being transported in small batches, a method believed to have been adopted to evade security patrols and surveillance along forest corridors frequently used by criminal and insurgent groups.
The report added that the recovered materials have since been taken into custody for forensic examination.
Security agencies have also commenced investigations aimed at identifying, tracking and apprehending those allegedly connected to the shipment and the broader logistics network behind it.
The latest interception is seen as part of sustained counter-insurgency efforts targeted at weakening the operational capabilities of terrorist groups by cutting off critical supply chains and support networks across the North-East region.
