LAGOS State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed an immediate escalation of waste-evacuation operations across the state following the recent build-up of refuse in several communities.
News Point Nigeria reports that the directive has triggered the mobilisation of key environmental agencies, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Ministry of Environment, to intensify sanitation activities in affected areas.
As part of the emergency response, additional waste collection trucks and personnel have been deployed, while sanitation workers have commenced round-the-clock operations aimed at clearing accumulated refuse, restoring cleanliness, and normalising environmental conditions across the state.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed the development in a post on X, where he noted that Lagos generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, underscoring the need for sustained coordination, continuous intervention, and effective waste management strategies to maintain environmental standards in Africa’s most populous city.
“Dear Lagosians, I have directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation across Lagos following the recent build-up of refuse in some parts of our state,” the governor stated.
“LAWMA, LASEPA, and the Ministry of Environment are currently working around the clock. We have deployed extra trucks and personnel to clear the backlogs across all affected neighbourhoods. You should already see progress on the streets, and we will not stop until our city is completely clean again.”
While assuring residents that the government remains fully committed to resolving the situation, Sanwo-Olu also called for greater public cooperation in maintaining a cleaner environment.
“As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership. Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads,” he added.
The governor reiterated that his administration remains focused on safeguarding environmental health and ensuring that Lagos maintains safe and hygienic conditions for residents, stressing that the ongoing clean-up operation will continue until all affected areas are fully cleared.
