THE Rivers State government has confirmed five cases of cholera and nine associated deaths in an outbreak that has affected two Local Government Areas of the state.
The affected Local Government Areas are Akuku-Toru and Andoni.
According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the confirmed cases were recorded in Akuku-Toru, while the nine associated fatalities were reported across both Akuku-Toru and Andoni LGAs.
Dr. Oreh stated that the ministry has activated emergency response teams in the affected areas to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
Additionally, heightened sensitization efforts have been initiated across the state to educate residents on preventive measures.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene and promptly reporting suspected cases to health authorities.
She urged parents to cooperate with health teams as they work to mitigate the impact of the outbreak.
Residents in the affected communities are advised to ensure proper sanitation, drink only safe water, and seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration.
The government assured citizens that it remains committed to safeguarding public health and will provide updates as the situation evolves.
