Senate Moves To Track Lawmakers’ Attendance, Participation In Plenary

    By Hamza RufaiJuly 15, 2026
    Senate 5

THE Senate is considering the introduction of a system to monitor lawmakers’ attendance and participation in plenary sessions as part of efforts to boost commitment and engagement in legislative activities.

News Point Nigeria reports that the proposal was raised during plenary by Senator Abdul Ningi, who called on the Senate leadership to maintain detailed records of lawmakers’ attendance and contributions to debates and other legislative business.

According to Ningi, regularly identifying senators who actively participate in proceedings would encourage greater dedication to legislative responsibilities and motivate members to remain in the chamber until the day’s business is concluded.

He argued that maintaining accurate records of attendance and participation would strengthen commitment to legislative duties and enhance the quality of deliberations in the upper chamber.

The proposal received support from several lawmakers, some of whom maintained that senators who consistently contribute to legislative work should be accorded special recognition.

The lawmakers suggested that active members be considered for honours and other forms of official commendation whenever such opportunities arise.

Backing the initiative, Senator Mohammed Monguno and the Senate Leader stated that attendance and participation records could also serve as important criteria when assigning leadership positions and other responsibilities within the Senate.

They noted that such a system would promote accountability and encourage lawmakers to become more involved in parliamentary activities.

Contributing to the debate, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau pointed to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as an example of commitment and discipline during her years in the National Assembly.

Barau recalled that Tinubu was widely known for her punctuality and regular attendance at Senate proceedings, describing her as one of the most dedicated lawmakers of her time.

He said her unwavering commitment to legislative duties played a significant role in shaping her political career and accomplishments.

According to the Deputy Senate President, the First Lady’s record demonstrates the importance of discipline, consistency and active participation in public service, qualities he urged serving lawmakers to emulate.
