SEVEN miners have been killed after a mining pit collapsed at Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
News Point Nigeria reports that several other miners were also injured in the devastating incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening while the victims were carrying out mining activities at the site.
A resident of the community, Albert Danlami, said the incident happened at about 7pm when the mining pit suddenly collapsed on the miners.
Danlami described the incident as devastating, saying the victims were trapped underground following the collapse.
He said residents and other miners immediately commenced efforts to recover the victims after they became trapped beneath the collapsed pit.
According to him, the incident caused panic in the community as residents rushed to the mining site following the collapse.
The Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
Tengwong said seven miners lost their lives in the incident, adding that the victims were carrying out mining activities at the site when the pit collapsed.
He said efforts were made to rescue the trapped miners after the incident, but they were eventually found dead.
Our correspondent reports that the collapse of mining pits has claimed many lives of miners across various mining communities in Barkin Ladi, Jos South, Riyom and other local government areas of Plateau State, with the latest tragedy adding to concerns over the recurring deadly incidents.
