THE Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, in collaboration with the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on ICT and Digital Economy, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), has organised and hosted a one-day capacity building workshop on cybersecurity and digital awareness for practicing journalists in the state.
News Point Nigeria reports that the workshop, held in Dutse, was aimed at enhancing digital safety in journalism practice, given the vital role journalists play in safeguarding information in the current era of global digitisation.
It sought to expose participants to best practices in cyber hygiene, online safety, and responsible use of digital tools in news gathering and dissemination.
In his welcome address, the State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ismail Ibrahim Dutse, reiterated the Union’s determination to continue training and retraining its members on various endeavours that promote professionalism, ethical conduct, and capacity enhancement.
Comrade Dutse expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation of the co-organisers, stressing that the workshop would be of immense benefit to participants and the NUJ, especially in today’s fast-evolving world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), digitisation, and cybersecurity awareness.
He described the training as a timely intervention that aligns with the NUJ’s broader vision to ensure that journalists remain safe, informed, and digitally empowered in performing their duties as the watchdogs of society.
Also speaking, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Digital Economy, Malam Murtala Lawan Kazaure, said the training would serve as a vital platform for journalists to become conversant with cybersecurity concepts, develop stronger digital hygiene practices, and further sharpen their experience in professional media practice.
Malam Kazaure reaffirmed the commitment of his office to continued collaboration with the NUJ in organising a series of ICT capacity-building programmes for both conventional and online journalists across Jigawa State.
He noted that such partnerships were essential to keep media practitioners abreast of emerging technologies and online security challenges.
The workshop featured two resource persons and ICT professionals, Malam Bashir Abba and Sadeeq Abubakar Muhammed, who delivered lectures and practical guidance sessions on cybersecurity and digital safety.
Their presentations covered topics such as identifying online threats, protecting personal and organisational data, and adopting best practices in digital journalism.
At the end of the programme, certificates of attendance were presented to participants online, marking the successful completion of the training and reaffirming the NUJ’s commitment to building a digitally literate and cyber-aware media community in Jigawa State.
