A MILD drama played out in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Sunday when Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, interrupted Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, as he attempted to deliver his remarks during the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
News Point Nigeria reports that the incident occurred during the high-profile ceremony, which also featured the formal installation of the First Lady as “Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua,” a prestigious Yoruba chieftaincy title conferred in recognition of her contributions to the nation and the Yoruba cultural sphere.
A video of the moment, now viral on social media, shows Governor Adeleke singing while addressing guests. As he continued, Senator Tinubu stepped toward the podium and subtly signaled that his time was up.
“I’ll give you five minutes to conclude your speech. Enough with the music, or I’ll switch off the microphone,” she told the governor in a low but firm tone.
The exchange drew mixed reactions from the audience some amused, others visibly stunned as the governor adjusted his remarks.
Despite the interruption, the ceremony proceeded without further disruption. Traditional rulers, political leaders, cultural icons, and dignitaries from across the South-West were in attendance, celebrating the Ooni’s decade on the throne and witnessing the First Lady’s installation.
The interruption quickly became the biggest talking point of the event, overshadowing even some of the day’s major highlights.
As of 3pm on Monday, the viral video continued to stir debate online.
While some social media users defended the First Lady’s action as a matter of time management, others criticised the move as inappropriate for a public ceremony involving a sitting governor.
The Presidency and the Osun State Government have yet to issue any formal comment on the incident.
