Chaired by Dr Abubakar Rabo Abdulkarim, the reunion served as a platform for reflection, reconnection, and renewed commitment among members of the class. Speaking at the event, Abdulkarim expressed deep joy over what he described as a long-overdue gathering.
He noted that the reunion—coming 29 years after graduation—was “a step in the right direction,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong ties among alumni. He added that beyond celebration, the gathering was also aimed at supporting the families of deceased classmates and strengthening the bond among surviving members.
The chairman further urged the Old Students Association to take a cue from the initiative by fostering similar engagements that promote unity and collective progress among alumni.
In her welcome address, Hajiya Husaina Sa’id Bichi, Chairperson of the Publicity Committee and Director of News at ARTV, described the reunion as “a moment of pride, reflection, and renewed unity.”
She highlighted that the gathering was not merely an opportunity to reminisce, but also a time to recognize the significant strides made by members of the class since leaving the university. According to her, the alumni have distinguished themselves in academia, media, traditional institutions, public service, and the private sector.
One of the major highlights of the reunion was the special recognition accorded to female alumni of the Class of 1997. They were celebrated for their resilience, leadership, and outstanding contributions as professionals, mothers, and community builders.
Many of the women honoured at the event have risen to prominent positions, including doctorate degree holders, professors, and chief executives, underscoring their vital role in shaping the legacy of the class.
Several attendees expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with old colleagues, strengthen longstanding relationships, and create new memories. For many, the reunion was both nostalgic and inspiring—a reminder of how far they had come and the shared journey that continues to bind them.
The gathering also reinforced the importance of sustaining active alumni networks, with participants calling for greater collaboration, mentorship, and support systems that can benefit both members and the broader society.
The event concluded on a high note, with a renewed commitment by members to uphold the values of unity, mutual support, and excellence that have defined the BUK Class of 1997.
