THE Senate has summoned all senators to an emergency sitting on June 23 to deliberate on matters relating to national security and other urgent national issues requiring immediate legislative attention.
News Point Nigeria reports that the extraordinary session will bring lawmakers back to the National Assembly weeks ahead of their scheduled resumption date, effectively cutting short the Senate’s ongoing recess.
In a notice dated June 15 and signed by Emmanuel Odo, Clerk of the Senate, lawmakers were directed to reconvene in the Senate Chamber at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 23.
According to the notice, the emergency sitting was convened at the instance of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
“The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention,” the notice stated.
The Senate also expressed regret over any inconvenience the emergency session may cause members and urged all senators to make adequate arrangements to attend.
“The Senate deeply regrets any inconvenience that this emergency sitting may occasion.
“Distinguished Senators are kindly requested to make necessary arrangements to attend the sitting,” the notice added.
The emergency session comes after the upper legislative chamber adjourned plenary on June 11 and proceeded on recess, with lawmakers originally scheduled to resume legislative activities on July 7.
The decision to reconvene ahead of schedule comes amid growing concerns over insecurity across the country, including recent attacks, killings and incidents of abduction reported in several states.
The move also follows a similar action by the House of Representatives, which reconvened on Monday for an emergency sitting to consider an amendment to the 2025 Appropriation Act aimed at extending the implementation period for the capital component of the budget from June 30 to September 30
