THE Senate has announced Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo (Gombe North, PDP) as the new Chairman of the Senate Public Accounts Committee, replacing Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
News Point Nigeria reports that, in line with Senate tradition, the Public Accounts Committee is chaired by a lawmaker from the opposition party.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by Dankwambo’s spokesman, Malam Farouk Yarma, who said the decision was confirmed during plenary.
According to the statement, the appointment forms part of the Senate’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its oversight functions and enhance accountability in the management of public funds.
Yarma explained that the Public Accounts Committee occupies a critical position within the National Assembly, given its responsibility for scrutinising government expenditures and audit reports.
He noted that the leadership of the committee is crucial in ensuring transparency, accountability and fiscal discipline in public finance management.
Dankwambo, a former Governor of Gombe State and former Accountant-General of the Federation, was described as a seasoned financial expert with extensive experience in governance and public finance administration.
“His extensive experience in public finance, taxation, forensic accounting, and governance is expected to significantly improve the committee’s effectiveness in executing its mandate,” Yarma stated.
Before his latest appointment, Senator Dankwambo served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.
According to Yarma, the appointment of the former governor is a strategic move aimed at strengthening accountability mechanisms within the National Assembly.
He added that Dankwambo, who has now assumed leadership of the committee, reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to promoting transparency and responsible governance through its committee system.
The spokesman further noted that the Senate believes such adjustments are necessary to sustain public confidence and trust in democratic institutions.
