Why We Are Yet To Pick A New Coach For Super Eagles – Sport Minister

MINISTER of Sports Development John Ewah Enoh says a new coach for the Super Eagles will be announced sooner than later.

He made this disclosure during an appearance on Politics Tonight on Channels TV on Wednesday monitored by News Point Nigeria.

The team have been without a coach since Finidi George resigned in June after a poor run of games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

But the wait seems to be nearing an end over the minister’s assurance, which may have come late, with the Super Eagles facing Benin Republic in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification tie in less than 30 days.

“The delay is because of a strategic plan to pick the right coach for the team.

“The appointment will be sooner rather than later,” said Enoh, who has yet to get over the disappointment of Nigeria failing to win a medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Herve Renard, Eric Chelle, as well as local coaches like Samson Siasia and Salisu Yusuf are some of the coaches linked with the job, but the Nigeria Football Federation has so kept its choice under wraps.

Enoh also said some government officials will be relieved of their responsibilities if findings prove that they contributed to Nigeria’s medal-less outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“All of those things, I am going to engage, I am going to interrogate,” he said.

“You don’t fire unless you interrogate. I have always stated my determination that I am not going to allow things to lie low; I am going to take them up one by one.”

Asked if heads will roll, the minister said, “Well, if that is what it takes; if my findings and interrogations get to that point that people become liable, people become responsible, for the kind of negative publicity that we had at the Olympics, why not?”

Enoh further said the different sporting federations in the country need comprehensive reforms for efficient sports development.
