Kano Hisbah, Gov Abba, Sheikh Daurawa And APC’s Attempt At Cheap Populism – By Abdulmalik Suleiman

    By Abdulmalik SuleimanMarch 4, 2024
    Abba And Daurawa

SINCE the Supreme Court dashed the hope of self pleased rhetoric “Gawuna is coming” proponents, the disorganized, displaced and distressed Kano APC supporters are now out again disturbing the peace of the good people of Kano State.

It is generally believed that a sinking man will forever find a straw to attach himself to. This is because survival is the first law of nature.

Also, a dying horse will always be seen kicking with the hope that its imminent misfortune will go away.

    UBA

This is the situation that the opposition, All Progressives Congress (APC) has found itself at the moment. A party that was roundly rejected by Kanawa in the last election is looking for ways to stage a rebound.

Like the proverbial sinking man, it is looking for ways and means to resuscitate itself from the political death the people of Kano have consigned it to.

For some time, the party have been in hibernation with nothing to take up with the Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf until a miscommunication feat ensure between Gov. Abba and the head of Hisbah Agency, the respected Sheikh Aminu Daurawa.

Sheikh Aminu Daurawa is an amiable dedicated and committed Islamic scholar, highly revered because of his vast knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence. He’s a man highly respected across all Islamic sects because of his sincerity of purpose to Islamic issues.

    Thomas Sankara African Leadership Prize

Thirsty for an orderly society and his penchant for standard and merits, former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso appointed Sheikh Daurawa to lead Hisbah without the former governor interference in the operation and running a the organization.

Gov. Abba upon his return from an overseas trip, share his opinion on reorientation of the society. He sheds more lights on the operation and repositioning of Hisbah, especially on how best the organization can handle certain circumstances when he hosted some leagues of Kano Imams.

Nigerian TAX Reform - Federal Goverment

This however prompted our much respected Sheikh Daurawa, a committed and dedicated Islamic scholar to resigned his headship of Hisbah apparently based on what the governor told his guests.

Seeing a likely political advantage from the brouhaha, the APC leadership, it’s rank and file as well as it’s goons have gone to town and populated the social media space to pour invectives at the governor.

This is a sheer hypocrisy and duplicity considering the relationship that exists between the state government, the leadership of the Kwankwassiyya Movement, led by Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the much respected Sheikh Daurawa.

For the avoidance of doubt and for the following reasons, how can the state government, and the Kwankwassiyya Movement conflicts or undermine the same cleric when it is known that Hisbah was Established by Kwankwaso’s administration.

It was the government of Kwankwaso that first appointed the Sheikh as the leader of Hisbah only to be sacked by the government of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje who labelled him a liar and hypocrite.

Curiously, today it is Ganduje’s supporters, APC elites and clerics sympathetic to them who have suddenly developed love for Sheikh Daurawa for political gains. What a hypocrisy.

It is also a common knowledge that Gov. Abba reappointment him (Sheikh Daurawa) back to his position last year when he (the governor) was sworn into office to assist him in reposition Kano State state in the of social reorientation.

Gov Abba never sacked the Sheikh but only offered an advice that benefits Hisbah with a view to changing it’s modus operandi in line with Islamic teaching and nothing more.

The thinking of the governor is to reform, reposition and equip the organisation in a manner that would bring it to terms with Islamic roles and I think majority of Kanawas would see it in that light.

My appeal to Islamic scholars and many other conservatives elements in Kano is to see how the reforms being proposed by the governor will succeed as it will ultimately bring Kano at par with other prominent Islamic environment where things are done with civility and decorum.

I am however using this opportunity to appeal to Sheikh Daurawa to return to the job and continue with his good job, also to join hands with the state government to take Kano State to the next level.

    Suleiman writes in from Abuja.
