TWO US Navy pilots were shot down over the Red Sea early Sunday in “an apparent case of friendly fire,” the US military said. Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels said later on Sunday they had “targeted” the aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman a day earlier in an operation that led to “shooting down an F-18 aircraft” and thwarting “American-British aggression” against Yemen. United States Central Command said late on Saturday that both US pilots were recovered alive but “initial assessments indicate that one of the crew members sustained minor injuries”. This incident, “was not the result of hostile fire, and…

CYCLONE Chido has killed 94 people in Mozambique since it made landfall in the east African country last week, local authorities have said. The country’s National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management (INGD) said 768 people were injured and more than 622,000 people affected by the natural disaster in some capacity. Chido hit Mozambique on 15 December with winds of 260 km/h (160mph) and 250mm of rainfall in the first 24 hours. The same cyclone had first wreaked havoc in the French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, before moving on to Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. In Mozambique, the storm struck…
KENYAN business student Nelson Amenya has been hailed as a hero by those campaigning for greater transparency in the deals his government makes with private firms. Recent Kenyan history is littered with stories of huge contracts that have resulted from corruption – and despite laws that are supposed to prevent this from happening, there are suspicions that it continues to take place. Thirty-year-old Mr Amenya, who is studying in France for an MBA, leaked details on social media of what he said was a proposed agreement between Kenya and the Adani Group, an Indian multinational, in July. It concerned the…
GABRIEL Jesus took his goal tally against Crystal Palace to five in four days as Arsenal hammered their London rivals 5-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday to reclaim third spot in the Premier League. Palace will be sick of the sight of the former Manchester City forward, who scored a hat-trick against them in the League Cup quarter-finals at the Emirates on Wednesday. Jesus netted twice in the first half on Saturday and was only denied a third by the width of a post, with Kai Havertz reacting quickly to convert. Palace forward Ismaila Sarr, who had pulled his team…
MIKE Casey says he has never seen anything like it. In fact, the former States Department official — who served as a deputy political counsellor at the United States Office of Palestinian Affairs — described his experience as a diplomat in Jerusalem as a humiliation. “It’s frankly embarrassing … to see just the way we give in to the demands of the Israeli government and continue to support what the Israeli government is doing even though we know it’s wrong,” Casey told Al Jazeera. “And I’ve not seen that in any other country that I’ve served in.” After four years…
KYIV on Saturday staged a major drone attack on the Russian city of Kazan, 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) from the frontier, the latest in a series of escalating aerial attacks in the nearly three-year conflict. A drone smashed into a high-rise apartment building in the city of more than 1.3 million, damaging a skyscraper but leaving no victims, local officials said. Though attacks so far into Russian territory are rare, Kazan and the surrounding oil-rich region of Tatarstan have previously been targeted by Ukrainian drones. Such strikes are seen as embarrassing for Russia, almost three years into its military offensive…
KENYA’s President William Ruto has incorporated even more opposition figures to his cabinet in a move seen as trying to solidifying his hold on power amidst increasing criticism of his administration. Ruto recently reached out to his rival and predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta in a surprise meeting that came months after he had brought into government allies of opposition leader Raila Odinga. Kenyatta had backed Odinga against Ruto in the closely fought 2022 election. He said he had decided to work with his former rivals to promote national unity as well as “build bridges” and create “more synergy” in his government.…
TWO men have been arrested in Zambia accused of being “witchdoctors” who had been tasked with trying to bewitch the president. The police said they had arrested Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and Leonard Phiri in the capital, Lusaka. “Their purported mission was to use charms to harm” President Hakainde Hichilema, said the police statement, released on Friday. Many people in the southern African country believe in – and live in fear of – witchcraft. The police said Mr Candunde and Mr Phiri were hired by Nelson Banda, the younger brother of MP Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda. The MP was reportedly arrested…
BOURNEMOUTH manager Andoni Iraola has paid tribute to Ruben Amorim’s impact at Manchester United ahead of the Cherries’ match at Old Trafford on Sunday. Iraola’s side are sixth in the table, seven places ahead of United but just three points clear of their opponents. Brought in after Erik ten Hag was sacked as United boss, Amorim’s stint began with a draw against Ipswich. United have since won four games and lost three, with last weekend’s derby defeat of Manchester City followed by a League Cup loss against Tottenham. “I think they are different,” said Iraola, whose side won the equivalent…
ISRAELI forces have shot and wounded a Syrian protester demonstrating against the army’s presence in a border village in southern Syria, the Israeli military says. Israeli fire injured the man, identified by local media as Maher al-Hussein, in the leg on Friday as protesters gathered in the town of Maariyah to demand an end to the Israeli military presence in the area. A local journalist told Al Jazeera that al-Hussein was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Since opposition forces toppled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes on Syria…
A LAST-MINUTE budget bill has passed in the United States House of Representatives to keep the federal government funded and running through mid-March, averting an impending shutdown. The continuing resolution now progresses to the Senate with only hours to spare before the shutdown is slated to take effect on Saturday at 12:01am local time (05:01 GMT). On Friday evening, the temporary budget legislation sailed through the House with an overwhelming 366 votes in support. Only 34 representatives, all Republican, voted against the bill. One Democrat, Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas, abstained by voting “present”. “We are really grateful that tonight,…

FRANCE began withdrawing soldiers from Chad on Friday, the country’s defence ministry said, after N’Djamena last month abruptly ended military cooperation with the former colonial power. A contingent of 120 soldiers left for France from a military airport in the capital, the ministry said in a statement on Facebook, 10 days after French fighter aircraft left the Sahel country for good. Chad had been a key link in France’s military presence in Africa and its last foothold in the wider Sahel region after the forced withdrawal of French troops from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger in the wake of a…
A PARIS court on Thursday sentenced a brother of France midfielder Paul Pogba to a three-year prison term, with two years suspended, after convicting him in a high-profile extortion case. Mathias Pogba will be able to serve his one-year sentence with an electronic bracelet rather than behind bars. The court also fined Paul Pogba’s brother 20,000 euros for participating in the attempted extortion of 13 million euros ($13.5 million) from Pogba in 2022, and for putting pressure on the player, his family and his business contacts to obtain the payment. The case involving six men linked to Paul Pogba has…
ISRAEL has carried out a series of attacks on northern and central Gaza that killed at least 40 people, including children, as a leading rights group accused it of committing “acts of genocide” by denying clean water to Palestinians. Separate Israeli attacks on Jabalia in northern Gaza, where Palestinians have remained under a tight siege for more than two months, killed at least 16 people, including 10 members of the same family, on Thursday. In Gaza City, an Israeli attack on a home in the Daraj neighbourhood killed at least four Palestinians, with another person killed in a strike on…
AS soon as Meda Ramana was elected the head of Garapadu village council in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, several residents complained to her of being wrongfully excluded from government welfare schemes. About 50 villagers – mostly women of the Dalit, Indigenous and religious-minority communities – told her in early 2021 that their annual welfare benefits, of 10,000 rupees ($119) to 120,000 rupees ($1,430), under various schemes, had been abruptly stopped by the state government. At first glance, it seemed to be an innocuous data entry error. But when Ramana enquired about the reasons, staff at the village…
MALARIA has been identified as the likeliest cause of an illness that has killed more than 80 people in south-western Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa’s main health agency said. Victims of the previously unknown disease had been suffering flu-like symptoms such as fever, headaches, breathing difficulties and anaemia. The majority of samples that have been tested indicated that they had caught malaria – which is caused by a parasite carried by mosquitoes and is endemic in the region – with widespread malnutrition exacerbating the situation. However health experts are not ruling out the possibility of other factors at play in…
MALAWI’s government is demanding the astonishing sum of $309bn (£245bn) in unpaid taxes and royalties from a US-based gemstone company for rubies exported from the southern African state over the last 10 years, its attorney-general has told the BBC. Columbia Gem House, a family-owned business which says that it upholds fair trade practices, dismissed the claim as “baseless and defamatory”. The government is also demanding $4bn from French gas giant TotalEnergies in unpaid revenue from an oil storage deal, and $9.5m from Turkish tobacco firm Star Agritech, said Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda. TotalEnergies declined to comment while Star Agritech…
KYLIAN Mbappe and Vinicius Junior both scored as Real Madrid cruised to a 3-0 victory over Mexican side Pachuca in the Intercontinental Cup final in Doha on Wednesday. Mbappe opened the scoring in the 37th minute before Rodrygo doubled Madrid’s lead early in the second half. Vinicius sealed a comfortable win for the Spanish and European champions with a late penalty. France striker Mbappe returned to the Madrid line-up in Doha after missing Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Rayo Vallecano due to a hamstring injury suffered in the Champions League win at Atalanta last week. Mbappe swept in from close range…
ISRAEL’s military said it has attacked “military targets” belonging to Houthi fighters in Yemen after intercepting a missile fired by the group towards Israel. “Following the approval of attack plans by Defence Minister Israel Katz, Air Force fighter jets, under the direction of the Intelligence and Navy branches, recently attacked military targets of the Houthi terrorist regime in the western coastal strip and deep inside Yemen,” the Israeli military said in a statement on Thursday morning. “The targets attacked are used by the Houthi forces for their military operations,” the military said. The Houthi-aligned Al Masirah TV channel said that…
